Wiki Loves Earth is an annual international photo contest of natural monuments
, where participants picture protected areas and upload their photos to Wikimedia Commons.
Wiki Loves Earth 2015 takes place – with the subject natural heritage (protected areas) – in various countries. For all participating countries there are separate competitions organized by local teams, so periods, rules, prizes etc. might differ a bit. And at the end of the year, after all country finalists have been chosen, an international jury will again select the overall winners; compare the gallery of 2014 finalists and winners
The goal of the project is, on one hand, to picture under a free license as many natural monuments and protected areas as possible
, on the other hand, to contribute to nature protection by raising public awareness
. These pictures are to be used to illustrate articles on Wikipedia and other Wikiprojects (Wikivoyage, Wikinews, Wikiquote etc.).
Wiki Loves Earth (WLE) was initiated and first held by Wikimedia Ukraine in 2013. In the second year, WLE 2014 took place in 15 countries/regions.
The basic aim of the competition is to collect photos of natural heritage sites – such as nature reserves, landscape conservation areas, national parks, scenic/landscape areas, remarkable gardens, etc. – to illustrate articles in the worldwide free encyclopedia Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects. Like Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM), we use official lists of protected areas, usually available from government agencies.
The focus is not only on sites of national importance, but also on those protected at the regional level, and on the widest variety of natural sites possible: forests, parks, gardens, rocks, caves, or whatever part of nature is protected in your country. This means that most users will be able to find several natural heritage sites close to them.
On 1st May 2015 the Wikimedia community with the help of its Ukrainian and Polish Chapters and volunteers is starting the third edition of the contest. Participating countries are listed here:
